Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a pattern of seasonal depression experienced by otherwise healthy and happy people. Typically, fall and winter bring down eelings not explained by day to day experiences. It is estimated that as many as 20-30% of the population living at latitudes in the northern sections of the US may experience at least some SAD symptoms.

The light box provides a measured amount of bright, color balance light equivalent to standing outdoors at noon on a cloudless day. This has been shown to help regulate the body clock. Photobiologists point out that the light is registered by the eyes through the retina, which then transfers impulses to the hypothalamus in the brain to normalize the body clock function.
